It’s almost October (I know I can’t believe it either) which means Halloween is just around the corner. Although, you probably have seen the candy and plastic pumpkins in stores since the beginning of September!

They say Halloween is fun when you are a kid, but I think college students have the most fun on Halloween night! Yes, the candy is great, but another essential for Halloween is fun and creepy decorations.

There is no better way to get into the Halloween spirit than getting your friends together and decking out your room or apartment in everything Halloween. However, just carving pumpkins for Halloween can get boring.

Here are eight awesome Halloween decoration ideas for your first apartment.

The Cute & Festive

1. Candy corn & candle center piece

Whether you are having friends over for a Halloween party or just want to give your apartment some Halloween spirit, this centerpiece will look great on your table. All you need is a clear glass bowl (round or square), a bag or two of candy corn and a tealight or a larger pillar candle (black looks more festive).

Fill the bowl a little less than halfway and then put the candle in the middle and pour more candy corn around the candle. Tealight candles do not burn for very long, but it is very easy to swap out the burnt candle for a new one. (If you are lighting any candle in your apartment make sure you always blow it out before leaving; never leave a candle unattended or near anything flammable).

2. Candy corn painted wine bottles

Even if you’re not 21 yet, wine bottles aren’t just for drinking, they are also great for decorating. Take an empty wine bottle of any kind and strip the label off (try hot water and soap and coconut oil and baking soda for the stickiness).

Next you will need orange, white and yellow spray paint; after painting the whole bottle white, paint the bottle like a piece of candy corn, leaving the top white, the middle orange and the bottom yellow. It looks best to blend the three colors, bordering each other an inch or two.

You can also place the wine bottles on a plate or tray with actual candy corn and add fake fall leaves around them. This will look great on any coffee or end table.

3. Painted pumpkins

Painting real pumpkins is a fun new twist on the pumpkin carving tradition. Painting the outside of a pumpkin can look better since you can add any color and design you could dream of and they also stay fresher longer than carving them.

It is easiest to spray paint the base of the pumpkin, then use acrylic for the more detailed painting. You can create a yellow Minion pumpkin or just a chic gold one. If you are not the artistic type you can paint words and letters on different pumpkins to spell out “boo” or something like that.

You can really place these pumpkins anywhere inside or outside your apartment. You can even stack two or three in a corner to utilize wasted space.

4. Hanging pumpkin lanterns

When you live in an apartment you normally do not have any place for outdoor decorations; however, you can use these jack-o-lantern hanging lights inside or outdoors. If you have a balcony or want to put something around the outside of your door, these lights are the perfect solution!

You can really hang these cute pumpkin lights anywhere in your apartment like on your bedroom wall, in the living room, or even around the bathroom mirror. You can find these lights in many different stores (Target & Walmart) in addition to Halloween stores for under $10.

The Creepy & Scary

1. Skull faucet

Don’t leave your bathroom out of the Halloween festivities: add a fake skull to freak your friends out! You can find these in pretty much every Halloween store. Depending on what type of faucet your bathroom has, it should fit right through a skull’s mouth. If it doesn’t fit, you could also place it on top of the back of the toilet. It will look perfect with Halloween decorated hand towels and pumpkin shaped soap dispensers.

2. Bloody handprint towel

Another thing that will spook your bathroom up is a bloody handprint towel. This will definitely creep all your friends out when they walk into the bathroom (and probably you when you get up to pee at 3 a.m.).

You can just use an old white towel you don’t care about and get fake blood at any Halloween store. You can also try this with a smaller hand towel in your kitchen.

3. Head in a jar

Okay, this one will take a little more effort, but is so worth it in the end! It just takes a photo-shopped head, a round and fairly large jar, water and yellow food coloring to pull this great prank and freaky decoration off.

However, to do your own head takes some Photoshop skills, so if you are not skilled in that area, you can always print one out from this website. After printing out the specialized head, or creating your own you will need to get it laminated (so it won’t dissolve in the water).

Then all you need to do is fill the jar up with water, add a drop or two of yellow food coloring and put the paper in the jar!

Setting these on your kitchen counter or in the refrigerator will guarantee to freak anyone out.

4. Spider wreath

You can hang a wreath for almost every major holiday or season, so why not Halloween? You will need a bag of plastic spiders, thick orange ribbon, a circle piece of Styrofoam and a hot glue gun.

You can find all of these supplies at most craft stores. Hot glue the plastic spiders randomly all over the Styrofoam circle and once completely dry use the orange ribbon to tie a bow and to be able to hang the wreath. You can hang this creepy crawly wreath on the outside or inside of your apartment door or even on your own bedroom door.

Happy decorating and happy Halloween, and whatever you do, don’t end up like this guy!
